Chapter 8

Toby didn’t know where his father was, but he wanted him to fix this shit. Trying his best not to make a scene, he wanted to scream at the ghosts to leave him the fuck alone. He wasn’t doing anything to them.

“Mr. Cosmos? Your father called to tell you that he’s not going to be able to make it today. That you should come to the police station and he’ll explain. Also, I’m to explain to you that if you have no money to pay for lunch, you’d better not order anything. He is not going to be able to cover you.” The man turned up his nose at him. “I shall cancel your lunch for you then.”

“No you won’t. You’ll bring it to me as soon as it’s finished. I don’t care what my father is doing, but he’s going to be paying for my lunch.” The man stared at him. “Go the fuck away. I have enough going on, and dealing with you too is not going to go well for you.”

“You really should be nicer to the living, Toby. I mean, it’s not going to go well for you if you keep pissing people off.” He didn’t bother looking at Linda. He’d killed her so long ago that he hadn’t even remembered her name until she told him. “Your daddy is in jail. Not visiting, like he made it sound—he’s been arrested. You should go there now so that you can be arrested too. I’m sure that they have a nice big chair waiting for you that has all kinds of probes and shit on it. Just for you.”

“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. My dad is the mayor. He would have told me should he have been put in jail.” Ericka, another woman that he’d killed, laughed. “What the fuck do you think you know anyway? Nothing, that’s what. So for the fucking last time, leave me alone.”

Of course they didn’t leave him. At any given time of the day or night, several of the dead would come by and annoy the fuck out of him. Last night he’d been treated to a visual of how he’d killed some of them. It had been fun for him when he’d done it, but seeing it again was a holy nightmare, especially since they were showing it to him from their point of view. They also made sure that he could feel every bruise and cut that he’d given them while he’d been at it.

His meal came to him with the bill. The waiter didn’t tell him that he had time to pay it. He asked Toby straight up if he was paying by cash or credit card. Twice he had to tell him that they’d bill his father or they’d be shit out of luck before they went away. Toby would never be back, he thought, not if he was going to be treated like this.

“And my meal isn’t right.” He didn’t have any cheese on his sandwich.
