Tiff

After a day of watching fish swim and staring at paintings, we head back to the condo and change to hit up a Fedeltà hotspot for drinks.

For whatever reason, I don’t have the energy to get all dolled up for a night out. I spend more time double-checking that my handgun is well concealed in my purse than I do putting myself together. Seeking out Ari, I find him ready and waiting for me in the living room.

His hands are in the pockets of his gray pants, and the corners of his mouth turn up as I approach him. I press my lips together and tilt my head to one side.

“You look amazing,” Ari says softly.

I blink at him, comparing our appearances. My flowy black sundress hangs more from my shoulders and belt than any other points on my body. His gray suit, sans tie, and his shirt unbuttoned to where his collar bones meet. Those few inches of tantalizing skin and muscle are enough to make any woman drool over him.

“Um, thank you. You do too.” I stumble over my words, unsure what response he’s hoping for me to say.

Apparently, I made the right choice. Ari smiles brighter. “Shall we?”

When we get to the cocktail lounge, we’re seated in a curved booth on the mezzanine. It’s cozy and off the beaten path, with a clear view of the bar and the front entrance. Once our drinks arrive, I snuggle up against Ari’s side.

“I have questions that are nagging me,” Ari says, a few inches from my ear. “But they’re not polite.”

I smirk around the rim of my martini glass. “About what, dear husband?”

He slides an arm along the backrest behind me. “You and Alic.”

My stomach muscles ache as I fight off a cringe. Setting my glass down, I cast a glance at him. Jealousy is fighting to win over Ari’s expression.

“Alic proposed out of the blue, and I didn’t know Siro had betrothed us, so I said, ‘fuck no.’ I didn’t mean to bully him, but I don’t regret it.”

“Wow,” he says, raising his brows with a bounce and reaching for his drink. He takes a gulp and licks his lips. “I was second choice.”

“For Siro, maybe.” I return to watching the crowd. “If he’d given me a choice from the start, you’d have been my first pick.”

“Well, hold that thought because my next question is about your tits.”

I hum. “Well, I have one about your dick. So that makes us even.”

Ari grins and kisses my temple as my own silly comeback has a flush crawling up my neck.

“I have a benign tumor. In my brain. In my pituitary gland. That’s why.”

Ari’s arm droops over my shoulders. “When did you discover that?”

I eye my drink, wondering if the few ounces of liquor are enough to warm my throat against the memory of fear so strong I tasted it for ten weeks. “Um, I don’t remember. Sometime in my thirties, I think.”

“And it’s…harmless?”

I nod, unable to look up despite the positive answer.
