CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Fergus

Over the next few days, I will plan my approach and build accordingly from her progress. Sparrow seems to be somewhat comfortable around me for some reason, but I know that is all about to change. She is going to hate me to her core. What I’m about to do is morally ambiguous at best and downright cruel at worst. But it’s necessary.

I spend the rest of the evening planning. I need to be methodical in my approach, which means I need to consider every detail. I start by reviewing all of the research online about phobias and exposure therapy. It's not that I doubt my abilities to push people's boundaries, but I want to make sure that my plan is rooted in science and not just deviance.

Once night falls, I head to Sparrow's room. She's sitting on her bed, reading a book she must have returned and gotten from the library. She tenses up a little when she sees me but then tries to smile.

"Hey," she says softly.

I don't return her pleasantries. I can't handle her with kid gloves or be anything other than an arse while doing this. "Are you ready for our first session?"

She nods hesitantly. "What do I need to do?"

"Nothing tonight, but we start first thing tomorrow morning ... seven sharp. Do whatever you need to do tonight to get your mind mentally in the game. Be ready to obey all commands."

Sparrow's expression hardens, and I know she's realized that things are about to get serious. Her gaze turns steely, and I can almost feel her apprehension radiating from her like a heatwave. Her lips press together as the gravity of the situation sinks in, but she eventually nods in understanding. I turn away, leaving her alone with her thoughts as dread and anticipation for what the morning will bring looms over us both.
