Chapter Twelve

Maria drove slowly, but before they had gone a mile, when they were close to the woods they had seen on the way to the town, she stopped the car and started to weep. José sighed. “Don’t cry,” he said. “You know I can’t bear it when you cry.”

She took a handkerchief from her purse and blew her nose. “I wanted so much for this to be wonderful for us. I have been so stupid. I imagined introducing you to my old family. They would be so proud I had married a civil servant.”

He hunched his shoulders and spread his hands. It was a very Latin gesture.

“How can you introduce me to your family if you lie to me about everything?”

She looked at him and started crying again. “I know, I have been so stupid. Please forgive me, José. I have ruined everything. Will you let me try to fix it?”

He spoke quietly, taking her hand. “Of course.”

“I told you my uncle was senile, he has Alzheimer’s, so we can’t go in. He panics. He doesn’t understand. But can I call my cousin to come, with his wife, and I introduce you?”

He looked around him at the growing dark. “Here?”

“It will just be five minutes, to shake hands and you can thank them for the cheese and the ham.”

He sighed and shrugged. “OK, call them. But isn’t it easier if we go back and they come out…?”

But she was already dialing. She waited a moment and smiled at him, then started speaking in Russian. After a couple of minutes she hung up, leaned forward and kissed him. “I love you so much, José. These years being married to you have been the happiest of my life.”

She kissed him again, for a long time, until they both heard the car pull up beside them. They heard the two doors slam and she gave him another kiss on the lips. “Come on,” she said. “Let’s get out and I’ll introduce you.”

He fixed a smile on his face and, as she climbed out of the driver’s side, so he climbed out too and looked across the roof of the Audi. There he saw a large, swarthy man who was not smiling. He had his arm extended across the roof and at first José thought he wanted to shake his hand. But then he saw the glint of metal. He realized it was a gun and, as everything began to make some bizarre kind of sense, a small part of his brain told him it wasn’t possible, because that this sort of thing didn’t happen to him. Then he looked at Maria’s face and saw that it was impassive, devoid of feeling. There was no remorse there, no love, only indifference.

Then reality exploded and he ceased to exist.

Dimitri, the man who had shot him through the head, and Jelko, who had remained in the background, carried the body into the woods and buried it. Meanwhile Maria made another telephone call. Colonel Alexandrina Vitsin answered on the second ring.
