DISTANCE, SPEED, AND TIME

Without any features to go by—for example, if you’re paddling across a lake in the dark or hiking through a desert or forest with little variation in the topography—you need another method for estimating distance. You should know your direction based on your compass heading, so if you know how far you have moved, you can plot your position. Distance can be calculated from time (you should always carry a working timepiece) and speed. The speed part you have to estimate, something you can do as you train. If you get in the habit of checking the time at the start and finish of each training session, and knowing the distance you traveled, you can easily work out your speed through various terrain types. The “Speed Estimates” table gives a good starting point for speed estimates on flat ground. Uphill or downhill slopes will affect speed accordingly.
