Chapter 8

In the end we compromised: the spell was darker than I wanted and lighter than Grimmy wanted. Neither of us was happy but it was the sweet spot of compromise. Misery loves company.

It is rare for me to imbibe a potion rather than rune with one, but there are some exceptions. The hydration potion is multifaceted; it will help you if you are dangerously dehydrated or if you’ve lost too much blood. I was about to use it for the latter purpose. Grimmy’s spell required blood in order to work, a whole litre of it. Since I refused to harm an animal to get that blood, it would have to come from me.

The hydration potion isn’t one I keep on hand, so I headed downstairs to the coven common room. It was after school and before dinnertime, so the coven kids had claimed the couch and were sitting in a puddle of happy limbs. I looked them over, noting that nobody was being left out. I wished an adult had taken such care of me when I was young. Mum had been more focused on my studies than on me making friends.

Meredith, one of my more studious witches, was sitting at the dining room table studying rune interactions. She had a notepad beside her. I nodded and she beamed back. ‘Hard at work I see,’ I commented approvingly.

‘Yes, Coven Mother,’ she smiled. It always feels weird to be called ‘mother’ by someone who is virtually my own age. Meredith looked over anxiously to check on her daughter, Ria, the one I’d caught canoodling with Henry.

‘She’s fine,’ I reassured her. ‘She’s slouched down with Henry.’

Meredith relaxed. ‘Thank you, Mother.’

I nodded and went past her to the coven’s potion store. It was manned by a very bored- looking Briony Fields who was slumped on a chair, one leg up, one down, scrolling aimlessly on her phone. I frowned. She wasn’t supposed to be doom scrolling on her phone, she was supposed to be checking the dates on the potions and noting what stock was running low. Not all witches choose to brew their own potions like me. ‘Briony,’ I said.

She jumped up and dropped her phone. ‘Oh! Coven Mother! You don’t often come down here.’ She laughed nervously.

‘I do not. Phones are banned whilst you are manning the potion store, Briony, you know that. If you’re bored and can’t bring yourself to do a stock take, then bring a book. Learn something,’ I chastised.

‘Yes, Coven Mother.’ She looked at her feet.

I pressed my lips together and swept past her into the store. Someone other than Briony had been tidying up. The store looked neat, though as I glanced around I saw a couple of potions nearing their expiry date. They should have been placed in the fridge to maximise their remaining use or disposed of. I frowned. I should come down here more often and do spot checks, but Ethan runs the store and his ego rivals mine. Even so, we would be bumping heads soon if he thought this standard was acceptable.
