As I settled into the starting blocks for the finals, I told myself one last time: No clock, all finish line, all faith.

Bang!

I felt no fatigue as I sprinted out of the blocks. Within 10 seconds, I had passed the runners to my right. The rest of the race was between me and my mind.

I wasn’t used to the dimensions of the track in lane 7. I rarely ever ran in that lane, so the turn came more quickly and everything looked different. From lane 4, I know my exact sight lines at 100 meters, 200, and all the way around the track. But in lane 7, I was never sure exactly where I was until I came into the final 100 meters. I was just running free, running from instinct, and running with power.

As I sprinted down the home stretch, I maintained my promise. I stayed relaxed and ran through the line. I knew I’d won, but I didn’t know my time. Finally, I looked at the clock: 48.70. A new American record!

I looked into the stands and couldn’t find any friendly eyes to connect with. My mom was the only one who made it to Athens, and I had no idea where she was sitting.

Does anybody know what I just accomplished? I thought. I’m the fastest American to ever run the 400 meters.

After I left the track and found my mom, we had plenty of time to celebrate. The race that chose me had given me the greatest gift. My name was now etched in the record books alongside US track greats such as Flo Jo, Michael Johnson, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

SANYA SAYS

The narrower your focus on the track, the better. Maintaining that focus is just as important at the end of a race as it is in the beginning. For those crucial first 50 meters, I looked as close as I could to my body. My eyes carried maybe 10 yards ahead of me. If I looked around and saw my competition, I could get anxious.

God doesn’t want us to look around and compare ourselves to others. We must stay committed to our true path and avoid distractions. Each and every day, we have the opportunity to move closer to fulfilling God’s plan for our life.

God can accomplish in a moment what could take us a lifetime. We can’t even begin to understand his power. Just like on the track, we need to keep a narrow focus in life. Our gaze should only be pointed in a single direction, to the undefeated Champion of champions.
