FIVE

1990. Darkness. A cacophony of noise, loud music blaring out.

A light switch is flicked on. CONNIE stands watching unnoticed by URSULA who jumps about, dancing manically.

This goes on for a while before CONNIE switches the music off.

URSULA stops. Her face lights up when she sees CONNIE. She goes to her and wraps her arms around her tightly before taking CONNIE’s face in her hands.

URSULA. You never said you were coming. Why didn’t you say?

CONNIE. Who were those people?

URSULA. If I’d have known –

CONNIE. Ursula. (Beat.) Who were those men?

URSULA. Horrible fuckers. Can I get you anything? You should ring next time. Let me know you’re coming. Got me off guard, wasn’t expecting you.

CONNIE. This is my flat –

URSULA. Would’ve tidied up.

CONNIE pulls a piece of paper from her pocket.

CONNIE. There’s a note from the flat upstairs. Threatening to report me, have me thrown out –

URSULA. Cunts.

CONNIE. How did you get in?

URSULA. Teleported how d’you fuckin’ think? Used me key, didn’t I?

CONNIE. You haven’t got a key. I took the key off you, Ursula. I said, didn’t I? You can’t just turn up any more not like this, not in this state. There’s piss in the porch. Someone’s pissed there.

URSULA. Fucking dirty bastards.

CONNIE. You’re gonna have to clean it up.

CONNIE starts to move around the room tidying up.

I said you could stay here then you let me down, then I said you could stay and it happened again, then I said you could stay and it happened again and I can’t do this any more now. Honestly, I can’t… someone’s coming, Ursula. I’ve got… someone coming and it fucking… stinks in here.

URSULA. It’s them fuckers. I can’t get your windows open, there’s some sort of security thing on them.

CONNIE. Who were they?

CONNIE opens a window.

URSULA. Pigs.

CONNIE continues tidying. URSULA picks up a can and takes a swig.

CONNIE. I’m supposed to be making tea for us.

CONNIE gets on her hands and knees, picking up stuff from the floor. She finds a small plastic bag with white powder inside and tucks it into her pocket. URSULA doesn’t notice.

URSULA. I’m not hungry don’t worry.

CONNIE. Not for you. I’m making tea for someone else.

URSULA. Who?

Beat.

CONNIE. A friend.

URSULA sits on the arm of the couch. She finishes the can and drops it onto the floor.

CONNIE stops. Beat. She picks up the can. URSULA looks down at her from above.

URSULA. Thank you.

URSULA turns the music back on. She is lost in her own world while CONNIE continues to sort out the mess. CONNIE switches the music off again.

After a few moments there’s a knock at the door. CONNIE stops, bracing herself. Another knock.

Fuck’s that? (Beat.) If it’s those pigs again, Con, tell them you’re calling the police.

Beat. CONNIE opens the door. ADRIAN stands there, a bottle of wine in one hand. He leans to kiss CONNIE.

ADRIAN. Hello.

CONNIE. Hi.

CONNIE stays at the door, delaying the inevitable.

ADRIAN. I’m a bit early. Sorry. I was going to wait outside but then I thought / I don’t know / you might look out of the window and see me / is everything… are you okay? Can I… come in?

Beat.
