It has been an hour since Max dropped me at my apartment, and I feel like a caged animal pacing my tiny living room as I replay his words repeatedly in my head. This is the second time that man has left me reeling and confused by his behavior. I let out a growl and throw myself down on my bed. At that moment, my cell rings. I sigh, snatch it from my end table, and answer. "Hello."
"Hey." Aiden's voice fills my ear. "How was your first day of work?"
"Why don't you call your best friend and ask?" My comment comes out a tad bitchier than intended.
Aiden sighs. "Come on, don't be a brat."
I sit up straight in my bed. "I'm not being a brat, Aiden; this is the sound of me being fed up," I snap. "I told you not to contact Max, but you went ahead anyway. I've told you I can take care of myself a million times."
"Aurelia, I'm only looking out for you."
"I don't need you looking out for me!" I yell. My brother remains silent for a long moment after my outburst. I pinch the bridge of my nose and count to ten. "I appreciate that your protectiveness comes from a good place, Aiden, but for the love of god, you're suffocating me."
Aiden has been quiet for a long time. Finally, he speaks, and when he does, I'm the one who is rendered speechless.
"You're right."
I blink. "What?"
I hear Aiden blow out a long breath. "You're right. About everything. I shouldn't have gone behind your back and called Max, especially when you specifically asked me not to."
"Yeah, well." Stunned, I don't know what else to say. I'm used to arguing with my brother until I'm blue in the face, so this is new.
"Can you at least do me a favor?" he asks.
"What?"
"The two of you have drifted apart these past couple of years, and this is the perfect opportunity for you two to get close again."
"What are you talking about?" My heart starts to pound in my chest.
"Kid," Aiden says in his knowing tone. Looks like Max's and my relationship, or lack thereof, hasn't gone as unnoticed as I thought.
