CHAPTER 6

NATHAN

Teresa shivers despite the warmth of the fireplace, and I pull her closer. Her soft curves ignite a fire in me, and it takes all my self-control not to ravish her.

“Better?” My voice is low.

“Much.” She smiles, leaning on me.

Fuck. I could get used to this. Maybe Luke wasn’t so crazy after all, getting tied down with Jessica. The firelight dances across Teresa’s face, highlighting the softness of her cheeks.

“Can’t have you freezing on me,” I say, moving my arm across her shoulders so she can snuggle in more. Damn if she doesn’t fit perfectly under my arm.

“I don’t think there’s much chance of that,” she whispers, looking up at me with her pretty hazel eyes.

My hand finds hers, and she laces her fingers through mine.

“Your hands are so rough,” she whispers, running her thumb over my calloused skin.

“Manual labor will do that.” I chuckle. “Yours are perfect,” I counter, bringing her hand to my lips and planting a soft kiss on her knuckles.

“Perfect for what?”

There's that flirtatious glint in her eye, and a primal reaction courses through my body. I won’t be able to keep my hands off her—or my clothes on—much longer.

“Perfect for holding. For touching.” I let my other hand trace the line of her jaw, feeling her warm under my touch. “For making a man forget his own name.”

She leans into my caress, her breath hitching slightly. “And do you often forget your name?”

“You make me want to.” It's true. When she's near, I can barely think straight.

The fire pops, and the way she's looking at me, like she wants to see the real me? It’s more potent than any drink or drug I’ve ever had. It’s more powerful than the adrenaline rush of military combat. Making her happy is an addiction I could spend my life feeding.

“What does the future look like for you, Teresa?”

Her eyes search mine, and for a heartbeat, I worry I've pushed too far. But then she exhales, a sound that feels like surrender.

Teresa looks at me for a long moment, and fear twists in my heart.

“Honestly? I don’t know. The life I had kind of imploded. I do know that I want more than what I had. I want to be who I am with someone who likes me for that. I figure with that,” she says, looking up at me with her pretty eyes, “I figure I can work everything else out. I want to be somewhere I feel like I fit in.”

“With someone who believes in you?” My voice is barely above a husky whisper.

“That would be perfect.” She nods, a lock of hair falling into her face.

I reach out, tucking it behind her ear, letting my fingers linger against her soft skin. “I believe in you, Teresa. I’d stand by your side through anything.”

The confession hangs between us, raw and unguarded.

“Oh, Nathan,” she says, her voice heavy with emotion. She presses my hand against her cheek, and it takes everything in me not to pull her against my body and never let her go.
