The difficulty and seriousness of a route grade is also affected by the current conditions – crevasses open up, bergschrunds become impassable, and straightforward ice/snow may be technically difficult mixed climbing. Rock can become verglassed or even snow covered, sometimes making life easier. The overall grades have a ‘+’ or ‘–’ to indicate minor differences.

See the following table for further information on various grades.

ALPINE GRADING SYSTEM

Grade

Description

F Facile (easy)

Straightforward, possibly a glacier approach and very simple scrambling. The snow or ice will be of an easy angle, e.g. Allalinhorn, West Ridge and Aiguille du Tour.
