In the morning, Jemima did not want to get out of bed. She had been abandoned by her guardian for her behaviour, and she had to apologise to the impossible aunt. She truly felt alone in the world. Would Fulton even guard her now that his benefactor had freed himself of responsibility for her?

Milly knocked on her door. “Please come down. Fulton says we must go on another excursion.”

She poked her head in the gap in the door, seeing Jemima sitting at her dressing table still undressed for the day. “Can I help you dress?”

Milly was dressed very prettily in a white dress with soft pink embroidered roses along the bodice. The handiwork reminded Jemima of Fulton’s work. Surely, he had not sewn on her clothes. Jemima shook her head. No that would be most inappropriate. “I will be down soon. Please let Aunt Prudence know that I am very sorry for my outburst and am ready to apologise.”

Milly smiled. “I will, though I did think she deserved it. I wish I had the same audacity as you sometimes.”

Milly’s companionable comment lifted Jemima’s spirits and allowed her to dress with some care as to what she was wearing. Aunt Prudence was less welcoming.

“I accept your apology with reluctance. Seeing that my nephew is soon to wash his hands of you, I will exert myself no longer in trying to put you in the way of a good husband.” So Aunt Prudence had heard the news.

“I appreciate it, aunt,” Jemima managed to say, although the words were difficult to get out, over the hurt she felt. She did not wish to be reminded that Mr Huntington, she dared not think of him as Edward, was desirous to be rid of her.

Try as she might, she had not been able to see how the situation could have worked any other way. At least, with her deception she had gotten to know him as a stranger might. Had she introduced herself as she should have done, he would have packed her off immediately, and they would have never known each other on the same intimate terms. While she was miserable in his rejection of her, she did not regret that they had spent a week together at the Horton’s and that he had kissed her. This was a rather tremendous realisation that caused her to sit down and request a cup of tea.
