Chapter Twenty

Irene’s Journal

August 13, 1982 (Age 17)

I wasn't able to talk my parents into removing me from this outdated tradition. The social season began a few weeks ago and I decided to take matters into my own hands. While on a date with William, I shared that I had no romantic interest in him. He was grateful for my honesty and confided in me that he already had romantic feelings for someone and wanted to pursue them. Curiosity got the better of me and I pressured for more information which he volunteered.

He told me how he and Claria have shared these moments and he can really see himself being with her. Honestly, I was glad he said her name because I might have had to kick the crap out of him as I already knew she felt that way about him.

Whenever it was our turn to go on a “date” we either spent it talking about Claria and what he could do for her or I would make it look like he and I were going out when it was really him and Claria.

Take for today as an example. Today's event was the horse races and a polo match afterward. I have zero interest in horse races and even less of an interest in polo.

We had to wear these absolutely ridiculous hats that covered most of our faces. This was perfect because all Claria and I had to do was wear a similar dress and swap hats. That way she still shared time with him during her allotted time and then we would switch out in the restroom so she could also take my place during my allotted time.

When I was supposed to be with the prince, I snuck away unsupervised for the first time in my life. I was able to go to a movie at the theater or walk along a creek hidden in the woods. There was a particular spot near the creek where I hid my sketch pad and pencils.

Being away from everyone gave me much-needed time to think. I thought about what I really wanted out of life and that was to be free from this one. After running through all the possibilities in my head I came to only one conclusion, that I was going to have to leave Gardenia in order for that to happen.
