I’ve never been so happy to have a beaver in my room in all my life.

My vagina is confused, going from hard shut down to dripping in an instant.

A man in a beaver suit should not be this sexy.

My rowing teammate should not be this sexy. But he’s like a knight in shining mascot armour.

I turn back to Troy. “The answer is no.”

He looks like he’s going to argue with me, like he’s been doing for the last five minutes when I told him no the first time—no to dating him, no to sleeping with him (which yes, I did have to clarify, because they are not mutually exclusive in his world)–but James growls.

Actually growls.

He steps into my room, towering over the two of us sitting on the bed.

Troy works out, he's told me, but he’s got nothing on James.

The beaver has turned into a dominant, alpha male on me, and I fight the urge to just lie back and let him have his way with me.

Cool green eyes glare at Troy, and the hard expression on James’ face melts my insides.

After a minute, Troy scoffs. “Whatever, Esmeralda. You’ve lost your chance.” He brushes past James and stomps into the hallway without a second look.

“Oh darn,” I quip, but it comes out all shaky.

James stares down at me, expression softening. He bites his lip, suddenly uncertain, and it makes my heart skip a literal beat. “Are you okay?”

Swoon.

Or maybe that’s the adrenaline leaving. My body feels shaky and tired.

“Yes,” I lie.

He frowns.

“Or, I will be.” When I brought Troy up here, I thought it was just going to be a quick no, I’d say sorry for leading him on, and Troy would be disappointed and leave. But he closed my door and pushed me onto the bed.

“That guy’s a prick.”

“You know him?”

His eyes flick to the side, and I know there’s a story there. But I don’t have time to hear it, because Margot comes screeching into my room.

“What’s going on? Why is Troy Anders leaving? He’s telling all his friends this party sucks, and they’re all going!”

James freezes in front of me, eyes fixed on the wall like if he stands still enough, she won’t see him.

“He likes you, Ezzie.” She crosses her arms. “Why is he leaving?”

I open my mouth, but she keeps screeching. “He’s an A-rated bachelor on campus! And he likes you.”

Her shoes are missing, her feet dirty, and hair is flying out of her chignon. “We need him to like Phi O. Go down there, and tell him you’ll do whatever he wants.”

My eyes fly open.

“Pardon?” James turns slowly.

“And you!” Her hands land on her hips. “No beavers! Get out of the Phi house!”

His gaze is icy as he stares at his sister.

She freezes, her mouth gaping.

He steps forward and ducks his head so they’re eye to eye. “Did you just tell someone to sleep with someone for the sorority? That’s fucked up, sis.”

She looks like a fish out of water, eyes huge, mouth working. A beat later, she snaps out of his arms.
