Three slow days, almost in silence, the survivors shaken by their losses. Two hundred men had been reduced to seventy on Jenny Cross. Pinemarten had fared better but had still lost thirty of her men.

Jemmy hardly slept. He had given the orders, had taken his men, the followers who had trusted him, into a slaughterhouse. For no great reward as well. The galleon had been carrying military supplies exclusively, it seemed. Some small amount of powder and ball and a few thousand pikeheads and some crates of blades, mainly shortswords. The guns had still been aboard and there was ball for them – if there was money on Antigua, they could buy them in for their own defence. Apart from that, bale after bale of uniform coats and breeches and trousers and of hides for the cobblers to knock up their own boots.

The lowest deck had been serving as a hold and they still had to work their way fully through it. Their were sacks of beans and cornflour and a few barrels of salt meat and more as yet unidentified towards the stern.

They were still rummaging the cabins and had come up with a modest amount of coin there – it seemed that the officers might have been paid up to date before sailing, possibly changing their home port.

Jemmy had been picking through the captain’s cabin, delivered his spoils to Janny as master of the ship’s purse, was due to look into the attached smaller cabins next.
