Ayden rolled to a stop at the back fence of the fairgrounds. He was ready for the competition—or he hoped he was. He’d never expected to be in a situation like he had gotten into during the previous months. Leaving Rory had been harder than he’d imagined. To top off the issue, he’d promised Rory he’d come back to visit…and he’d set a deadline. Now his daily goal was to get to the next rodeo and rope.

“Hey, handsome. That husband of yours let you out in the big, open world?”

Ayden spun to the voice and found Jordan Capps. Her smiling face was just the tonic he needed for his bruised soul. He luxuriated in the warmth of her personality like it was a warm April afternoon. A moment more passed with him frozen in place when she leaned closer and punched Ayden in the arm.

“What’s got a bee in your bonnet? Where’s my hug?”

With that, Ayden lost some layers of depression he’d taken on when he’d left the ranch. He lunged forward, wrapped his arms around Jordan and gave her a fierce hug. An instant later she slipped her arms around him, returning his embrace with equal ferocity. The two of them swayed back and forth then she released him, grabbing his shoulders and holding him at arm’s length. She studied him the same way he would a new herd sire. As it began to feel awkward, she stepped back and shifted her hands to her hips.

“You and lover boy are having issues, aren’t you? And I had such high hopes. Well, tell me what happened. Auntie Jordan can help you salvage the relationship.”

Ayden leaned against the truck and let out a sigh that should have rattled the dried remnants of his relationship with Dakota. He shook his head but knew he would tell Jordan the story.

“Dakota came home from a rodeo and was yelling at me about sleeping with Kit. Just all kinds of stupid bullshit.”

“Did you?”

“Did I what?”

Jordan sighed and rolled her eyes. “Don’t pull the dumb country boy routine with me. I’ve been listening to your junk since we were doing peewee rodeos. Kit’s everyone’s type. So the question is…did you?”

Ayden puffed up like a bantam rooster. Then he saw Jordan’s cocked eyebrow and wilted. “Not exactly…”

Jordan sighed again. “Sounds a lot like trying to say a blowjob isn’t sex.”

Ayden snorted and continued. “It wasn’t like that. Yes, we ended up in his room and he was putting his patented moves on me.”

“And you had a dose of morality?”

“Oh, shut up.” He paused for a second. “Yeah, I guess you weren’t that far from the truth. The important part is nothing happened.”

“You were in Kit Morris’ room and nothing happened?”

“Hard to believe, isn’t it? Still, it’s the truth.”

“I’m guessing Dakota didn’t trust you?”

Ayden considered the question for quite some time. Then he shook his head as he explained. “It wasn’t him. It was me. I’ve had it. I deserve a life too, and no one has asked me what I wanted since Dakota’s life unraveled when Kayla died.
