BARRETT

How the fuck can this woman, this one woman who has become my entire world, who I revolve around and live to see smile, tell me her being manhandled in her own office is not my fault? I was supposed to be watching her. I should have been at her side. If I were, that Craig asshole would have never tried a thing with her.

Red filled my vision when I walked into the copy room to find Craig doubled over and my woman’s hands linked together, I knew the exact hold she had to get out of. If there are bruises on her arms when I undress her later, if she’ll let me, I will kill that son of a bitch. I’ll kill him and string him up outside the brownstone, so everyone knows the consequences of messing with our woman.

I shake my head, trying to rid myself of the thoughts of her being hurt. I’m so damn proud of her, of the way she fought for herself, the way she fought for us by not being ashamed of us. Still, guilt is choking me, a heavy haze around me, making me feel like I can’t take a breath.

I whisper, “I should have been there with you. Then that fucker would have never touched you.”

I can’t take my eyes off my woman, her blue eyes telling me so much, telling me to trust her words. I barely register Colt’s deathly calm voice filled with icy rage, “Who touched her? What happened?”

Ella doesn’t break eye contact with me and keeps her voice low and soft like she’s taming a wild beast; the beast which wants to break free of the confines of my skin. “I told Barrett I needed to go to the copy room.” She arches an eyebrow at me, challenging me to not let the shame and guilt overtake me. “I told him I’d be right back because I usually am. Craig came up to me while I was making copies. He told me I’d be going to see a show and having dinner with him once I no longer have you guys as bodyguards.” She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly, anger filling her eyes, but I know it’s not directed at me, even though it should be. “He told me he saw me at Club Sin with the three of you. He told me if I could be a whore for you guys then I could be a whore for him.”

Colt grits out, “I’ll fucking kill him.”

Ella smirks, “No need. He grabbed me.” I can’t hold her eyes anymore, mine slide closed, not able to relive the moment when I was too late, when she had to fend for herself. I feel the small, soft hands of the only woman who has ever held my heart against my cheeks. “Look at me,” it’s not a plea, it’s not a soft caress, it’s a low demand. I snap my eyes open and she’s smiling softly at me.
