Chapter 22

After once more struggling to invoke spirit, I lay down on the grass in the backyard and made a fist to dim the orb hovering above me. Stars twinkled in the cold evening sky, reminding me of nights back in Texas, when I’d had no idea supernatural creatures existed. Now, instead of cramming for exams or goofing off with friends, I had witchcraft and a prophecy to focus on. At least controlling the elements was becoming easier with practice. Except for spirit. Spirit continued to ignore me, refusing to make an appearance.

Keep trying. Kaleb’s voice crept into my mind. You can do it.

I sat up and searched the bonfire, needing to set my eyes on the reason I no longer wanted normal. Because nothing could compare to Kaleb and what we had together. He made my days better and my future brighter.

Twenty wolves in human form talked nearby, unconcerned by my presence, while the pack alphas sat in their usual spot with an unobstructed view of the house. My heart ached when Kaleb laughed at something Malia said. I missed him and wanted to be there, hanging out with him and the wolves. Could that ever happen? Especially given what King Varick told me about the Crenshaw pack and why the other wolves targeted them. When I’d talked to Rosella about it, she hadn’t seemed shocked; she’d thought it actually made sense. I’d hoped to discuss it with Kaleb, but we were never alone.

Kaleb’s eyes flickered yellow. You have company.

“What are you doing out here?” Grace stopped in front of me, dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. “It’s not safe.”

“You haven’t heard?” I nudged my head toward the woods behind me and released my fist to brighten the orb. “The wolves want their alphas back alive, so that means keeping a close eye on me. There’s two wolves constantly watching me, making sure I don’t get kidnapped or run away.”

I hadn’t seen Grace since Boris carried her into the house last night. They’d given her healing tea and put her to bed. This morning, Calandra had insisted we let Grace sleep and told me they’d already questioned her. Grace’s memories were hazy. She didn’t know where Julius was or how she’d ended up with vampires. She’d told them he kept the kidnapped witches comfortable but had no information on the pack alphas or what Julius planned to do next.

“Well, you shouldn’t be alone. Where’s Garrett?” Grace sat on the grass in front of me and crossed her legs.

“He’s busy.” I lowered my gaze to the dandelions that grew when I’d invoked earth earlier. Garrett still avoided me, so asking for his help had been impossible. At least he hadn’t ended our fake relationship. I just needed to be patient and give him space. “Garrett knows the wolves won’t bother me. There’s no reason to worry.”

She shook her head. “Boris told me what happened with Carter and Malia. The High Council watched you fight two pack alphas and didn’t stop it.
