The next morning June woke, after a restless sleep, thinking about Jim. Her doctor’s appointment was at 1pm. She showered taking her time. She wasn’t too excited about going but she suspected that this wasn’t anything she could let go. She was unprepared for what she was about to find out.

At the doctor’s office, while filling out the necessary papers, she said, “I’m from Rochester and I have no insurance. Will you still be able to see me?”

“Oh, yes,” said the friendly receptionist. We don’t refuse anyone here.”

They gave her more forms for emergency care to fill out. Using her new name and fudging her age to eighteen would prevent them from asking too many questions. When finished, the nurse led the way into the doctor’s office. “I’m going to take your blood pressure, temperature and weight and Doctor Angela Andres will be right in.”

Soon Dr Andres arrived sat down and asked, “I see you’re eighteen. How long have you had this nausea and feeling of sickness?”

“It had been going on for about a week before I left home and I thought it was just a touch of the flu so didn’t think too much about it. When it continued I contributed a lot of it to nerves. But since it hasn’t eased up I thought I better have it checked out.”

After Doctor Andres checked June, she wore a frown on her face, as she quietly and asked, “Do you have a boyfriend? How long have you been sexually active?”

This flabbergasted June as she stammered, “I don’t have a boyfriend. Why?”

“Because, I’m afraid you’re about 2 ½ months pregnant.”

June suddenly feeling faint and nauseated started to cry. “No, I can’t be! This isn’t right. What will I do?”

“You have a couple of choices, either you carry the baby and keep it or put it up for adoption. If this wouldn’t work for your situation you could elect to end the pregnancy. You should talk with someone about this so they can help you make up your mind. Do you want me to call anyone?”

Crying so hard June blurted out, “No. I certainly don’t want you to call my parents. I’m going to be eighteen soon. My so-called step-dad has to be the father. Oh, how I hate him!”

With alarm but kindness in her voice, Dr Andres said, “We need to report your situation to the authorities. This could be considered possible rape. Was this consensual?”

“No, way! He forced me and told me if I told anyone he would kill my mother and me. I don’t want him to know about this.” Still crying, June blurted more of what had been in her heart for so long. “He’s been doing this to me since I was 10 years old. When I tried to tell my mom what was happening, she called me a slut and told me to get out of her sight. But I finally got even with him. I hit him over the head and thought I had killed him, but he’s alive and now he wants to punish me.
