Chapter Fourteen

Lauren stood at the counter, grinding coffee beans while she tried to make sense of what Shane explained. It had been a while since she'd seen him, and the usual flutter of attraction in her belly distracted her from his story. He insisted the minute they got into the house they put Marnie in a room where she needed to stay until everything was set for the trade.

She was still unsure what the trade was. For that matter, why it was essential to lock Marnie in a room after all, where would she go? They were in an isolated area. According to the weather reports, sometime in the next twenty-four hours they were going to have a heavy spring snowstorm. There was usually one bad storm in March before spring officially hit the mountain.

“Shane, what does Mr. Collins have to say about your plan?”

“I told you. He doesn't know and he's not going to. That's why I brought Marnie here. I knew you would look after her while I went back to Virginia. Haven't you been listening?”

“Yes, I have, but you aren't making sense. I still don't understand what you are going to accomplish bringing Ms. Hansen here.”

“Who?”

“Marnie.”

“Oh, sorry. Okay, I'll explain again. That awful Mr. Bowman got the account Mr. Collins wanted. I was talking to him about the gardens when Ms. Harbarker called to let him know. He swore and was upset he lost another one. I decided to follow Mr. Bowman and I found out he had a girlfriend. I figure if he wants her back, he'll give Mr. C his account.” Shane shrugged as if his idea made perfect sense. “Then I'll tell him where he can find her, and he can come get her. It's a workable plan. I don't understand why you don't get it. You're really smart. Anyway, a lot smarter than me.”

“For God's sake, Shane, Marnie's a person, not some piece of property to be taken away and then given back.” Lauren sighed in frustration at the look of bewilderment on his face. “Besides, don't you realize they’ll put you in jail?”

“No, that's the beauty. They'll never know it was me. I'm going to do everything with notes. I seen this movie once where the notes were words cut out of magazines and dropped off by someone that had nothing to do with the case.”

“Marnie's going to tell who did it.”

“She likes me and doesn't want me to go to jail. She said so.”

“So you'll let Mr. C take the heat?” Lauren asked in exasperation. She felt a twinge of jealousy over hearing the other woman liked him, but she'd worry about that later.

“What heat?”

“Well, when you tell Mr. Bowman where he can find his girlfriend, he'll come here, and since it's Mr. C's property, don't you think he'll assume Mr. C did this?”

“Oh, I didn't think of that. Maybe you could drive her to Vail and leave her at a café. He could pick her up there, don't you think?” Shane asked with such a look of pleading she couldn't say no.
