Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
The familiar sound of even more familiar machinery invaded my consciousness. Like the steady thrum of a heart, but mechanical. I knew that I was in the hospital. It wasnât like it would be the first time Iâd fallen asleep in a patientâs room or in an empty one while waiting for another task to be completed.
It was the first time upon waking in one, though, that I found myself unable to sit directly up. My wrist jarred painfully, and the sudden movement seemed to reawaken the injuries in my chest, which burned to life angrily as my head pounded. It was like a million snare drums had taken residence inside of my skull all at once. I was getting very tired of waking up discombobulated, with no idea where I was or how I had gotten there, and sporting a headache.
It was becoming a trend that I didnât approve of in the slightest.
My eyes cracked open with difficulty, tongue running along the line of my lips and the roof of my mouth to try and dislodge that metallic taste that let me know I had been pumped full of painkillers. IV painkillers always took cottonmouth to a whole new level. I could feel the pinch of the needles attached to my skin, grimace twisting my features before I blinked, hazily attempting to focus my gaze.
The blurred objects in the room slowly cleared, and the warmth I felt against my hand surprised me, forcing my eyes to tear to where Ryder sat by my bed. His body was hunched over, day-old stubble darkening his jaw line as his fatigued, disquieted golden eyes ran over my features. âYouâre awake,â he grumbled, voice more scratchy than I had heard it yet.
My hand went to lift, intent on curling over his where it rested, but it was stopped by the cold metal cutting into my wrist. âWhat theââ Handcuffs. I was handcuffed to the hospital bed I was in, and my stomach dropped even as confusion set in. Why would they handcuff me? The only patients I had ever seen handcuffed were criminals or patients with mental illness, neither of which category I fell under.
âMark is missing,â Ryder explained carefully, eyes rotating to the door briefly before focusing once more on me. âAnd as you were the last one seen with him . . .â His lips thinned, glancing down to where his hand lay over mine before looking back up once more, guilt tearing his gaze.
âThatâs utterly ridiculous though! I was injured as wellâhow could they think that?â If I had been the one to injure him, or been involved in it, I wouldnât have been left inside of that alleyway. I didnât understand why the wolf would have taken Mark, though; the man had seemed like nothing more than a minor inconvenience in its way.
The reality of Mark being missing, and what all it could mean for both he and Addie, settled over me, guilt and worry washing over with it.
