TWELVE
There was a guy in a well-cut blue suit. He was Chinese, tall and elegant. He smiled at me and spoke in the kind of cut-glass English youâd normally associate with Hugh Grant.
âMr. Bauer?â
âWho are you?â
âInspector Michael Lee.â
âIs that supposed to mean something to me?â
He reached in his pocket and pulled out a wallet with a badge. It had a picture of him on it and said he was an inspector with the Singapore Police Force. I handed it back.
âWhat can I do for you?â
He raised an eyebrow. âWell, you could let me step inside for five minutes so we donât have to talk out in the corridor.â
I stepped back, and he came in. I pointed to the sofa. âCan I offer you a drink?â
âNo, thank you, Mr. Bauer, not while Iâm on duty. I wonât take up much of your time.â He sat, and I sat in the armchair across from him. âAs I am sure you know, the British have very close ties with Singapore in the areas of defense, antiterrorism, and intelligence gathering.â
âSure.â
âSo they would like to know, Mr. Bauer, what you are doing in Singapore.â
âWhy?â
He smiled. âDo we have to play games?â
âI donât know about you, Mr. Lee. Iâm not playing any games. As far as I am aware, I donât need a special reason to visit Singapore. And why I am here is none of their damn business, or yours, for that matter.â
He was unfazed. âWell, thatâs what I am here to find out, Mr. Bauer. Whether your visit to Singapore is, in fact, any of our or their damn business. The British SIS informs me that they are aware of you. They are aware that you work for the United States government, and I am asking you in the least offensive terms I know how, why are you here?â
I watched him for a long count of five. Then I leaned forward. âIf you know that much, Mr. Lee, then tell the British Special Intelligence Service to go ask my boss why I am here. But Iâll tell you what I think. I think, if you havenât done that already, itâs because you donât know shit. Youâre fishing, and Iâm not sure I believe youâre even a cop. Last time I checked, the SPF were pretty good professionals. So why donât you take that piece of plastic you got from your box of cornflakes this morning and get the hell out of my room?â
I stood, and he stood too. âIâm sorry you feel that way, Mr. Bauer. It does not seem to me to be a reasonable reaction. I will be compelled to look more closely at your case.â
âIâm here on vacation, Lee, and as long as that vacation lasts, I donât want to see your face again. Get out.â
He crossed the room with some loss of dignity and left.
I was debating whether to call the brigadier and have him talk to the British Secret Intelligence Service, otherwise known as MI6, when my cell rang. It was CD.
