TWELVE

There was a guy in a well-cut blue suit. He was Chinese, tall and elegant. He smiled at me and spoke in the kind of cut-glass English you’d normally associate with Hugh Grant.

“Mr. Bauer?”

“Who are you?”

“Inspector Michael Lee.”

“Is that supposed to mean something to me?”

He reached in his pocket and pulled out a wallet with a badge. It had a picture of him on it and said he was an inspector with the Singapore Police Force. I handed it back.

“What can I do for you?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Well, you could let me step inside for five minutes so we don’t have to talk out in the corridor.”

I stepped back, and he came in. I pointed to the sofa. “Can I offer you a drink?”

“No, thank you, Mr. Bauer, not while I’m on duty. I won’t take up much of your time.” He sat, and I sat in the armchair across from him. “As I am sure you know, the British have very close ties with Singapore in the areas of defense, antiterrorism, and intelligence gathering.”

“Sure.”

“So they would like to know, Mr. Bauer, what you are doing in Singapore.”

“Why?”

He smiled. “Do we have to play games?”

“I don’t know about you, Mr. Lee. I’m not playing any games. As far as I am aware, I don’t need a special reason to visit Singapore. And why I am here is none of their damn business, or yours, for that matter.”

He was unfazed. “Well, that’s what I am here to find out, Mr. Bauer. Whether your visit to Singapore is, in fact, any of our or their damn business. The British SIS informs me that they are aware of you. They are aware that you work for the United States government, and I am asking you in the least offensive terms I know how, why are you here?”

I watched him for a long count of five. Then I leaned forward. “If you know that much, Mr. Lee, then tell the British Special Intelligence Service to go ask my boss why I am here. But I’ll tell you what I think. I think, if you haven’t done that already, it’s because you don’t know shit. You’re fishing, and I’m not sure I believe you’re even a cop. Last time I checked, the SPF were pretty good professionals. So why don’t you take that piece of plastic you got from your box of cornflakes this morning and get the hell out of my room?”

I stood, and he stood too. “I’m sorry you feel that way, Mr. Bauer. It does not seem to me to be a reasonable reaction. I will be compelled to look more closely at your case.”

“I’m here on vacation, Lee, and as long as that vacation lasts, I don’t want to see your face again. Get out.”

He crossed the room with some loss of dignity and left.

I was debating whether to call the brigadier and have him talk to the British Secret Intelligence Service, otherwise known as MI6, when my cell rang. It was CD.
