CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

11:45 pm Central European Daylight Time

Engel Castle

Engeldorf-Pont

Luxembourg

“There was a Roman sentry tower here in the first century,” Aliz Willems said.

To Troy Stark, her voice was like a songbird’s call. A scientist could use it to categorize her, pinpoint her in a specific place and time.

She spoke with the clipped and refined voice of that golden class of people. She had lived in the best places, had gone to the best schools, and only fraternized with the best people. Troy could hear it. Somehow her voice let you know.

“The ancient keep is still there, at the center of the castle. The castle itself, as it stands now, was built on the remains of the watchtower, and later forts. That happened about the year 1200. Europe has a much longer history than America.”

Troy was standing at a large bay window, looking up at the sprawling medieval stone castle that commanded the hillside above them. It was lit up in the darkness, lights positioned to make it dominate the night.

The place was a bit of a wreck. From here, he could see that parts of the roof were missing, and much of the castle was open to the elements. There was a wide stone wall around it, with a narrow bridge across to a gate. There were spiral towers with giant windows. Did they have glass in the Dark Ages? Troy had no idea.

Apparently, Aliz Willems owned the castle.

“Why do you have it lit up?”

“It’s always alight,” she said. “That’s so people can see it. It’s something of a national treasure.”

They were in an old mansion at the base of the rocky outcropping the castle stood upon. They hadn’t turned on any lights when they came in. That was good. The fact that the castle was always lit up was also good. Nothing was amiss. It could very well be that nobody was home.

There was a seven-car garage outside on the grounds. Only three cars had been in it when they arrived, all of them wrapped in showroom drapes. Troy had put the wreck of the Jaguar in there, and once it stopped smoking, he wrapped it in an extra drape he found folded and put away in a chest. He was satisfied, he supposed. They could be okay here. He hoped so.

He hadn’t seen much of the house other than this room, but he could tell it was large, and very stylish. From the outside, it seemed like a Victorian mansion, or something along those lines. In here, it seemed the interior had been ripped out and replaced with modern everything.

He turned and looked at Aliz. The lights cast from the castle were shining through the window. It gave this large room a sort of ambient light and shadow effect that he enjoyed. They were in the gloom, but he could see pretty well.

She was sitting on a sofa, drinking a glass of red wine. She was still wearing the bright red dress that had caught his eye when he was at the gala.
