It had been a good move to bring Brianna to the meet, Gideon decided. She’d picked up on things he’d missed. It hadn’t hurt, either, that she’d evaluated Callahan and Newhouse through a woman’s eyes. Women saw things differently than men did, especially when it came to other women.

He was grateful to have her on his side.

He didn’t want to admit it, but Nate’s death had rocked him to the core. He needed to get himself out of the funk he’d fallen in to. Easier said than done when he’d lost a good friend. That, plus the bullet wound to his arm, had knocked him off his game. Neither were an excuse for his inattention to detail. His and Brianna’s lives depended upon his skills and perception being first-rate.

With that in mind, he said, “I want to ditch this phone and get another one.” So far he knew of only Callahan and Newhouse who had the number, but that was two people too many.

“Good idea.”

They stopped at a convenience store and bought a burner. When he saw a semitruck parked at the side of the store, Gideon put the old phone in its tire well. “Maybe that will slow down anyone who tries to track us down.”

“Where to now?” she asked.

He didn’t have an answer to that.

He and Brianna needed to go on the offensive. Playing defense had never been his strength—not in football, not in the SEALS, and not now. He’d been trained to take the fight to the enemy.

The only problem was he couldn’t identify the enemy. Sure, he knew Jameson, but Jameson was playing it cagey and staying under the radar. Gideon knew he was probably pulling strings from wherever he was holed up, but the trick was finding his hidey-hole.

One thing he knew for certain—the enemy could be anyone. The idea that someone he’d worked with could turn on his colleagues, his friends, left a bad taste in his mouth.

But right now he could trust no one.
