CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Billie
Penny sits on the counter, something weâre not technically supposed to do. But itâs another day shift and the place is quiet except for a few regulars at the back, all of them consumed with their newspaper or their board games.
âSo you left, after all of that?â Penny says.
I pace up and down in front of the counter, filled with the same buzzing energy that has captivated me all night and day.
âYes. Well, I stopped to scrawl down my cell number so he could call me later.â
âWhy did you leave?â
âBecause I felt like my head was going to explode. I felt like my heart was going to explode. Is that enough of a reason?â I spin on her, and then quickly soften. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to snap.â
She smiles, hopping down from the counter. âThe stakes are as high as they get here, hon. Donât apologize. Did you believe him, when he said he felt the same way you do?â
âYes,â I say firmly. âThere wasnât even a small part of me that thought he was lying. I know heâs telling the truth. But that doesnât make it any simpler. That makes it all the more complicated.â
âBecause of your dadâ¦â
âI tried to tell him last night,â I whisper. âWhen I came back from Aaronâs place. If this is going to be more than a single date â which it clearly freaking is â I thought I should get it over with. Rip off the Band-Aid and all that. But he was going over our bills, sorting through them all, and I just couldnât stand the idea of making him even sadder.â
âHe couldâve been as wealthy as Aaron,â Penny says. âHe turned it down. And for what? For some vague principles.â
âPenny, come on, this is my dad weâre talking about.â
She sighs, shrugging. âI donât want to upset you. But heâs being a little selfish here. Itâs all about how he feels about money, how he feels about the economy. Itâs like my uncle. We canât even have a family dinner without him going off on some political rant.â
I want to tell her to shut up, but thereâs some truth in her words, no matter how much it pains me to admit it.
âIâm sorry,â she says a moment later. âI guess itâs just secondhand outrage, you know.â
âNot really.â
âYou didnât have to be here.â She waves a hand at the restaurant. âYou could be in college right now, studying creative writing, songwriting, music, where you belong. I know you could take out a loan, and if you decided to do that, Iâd support you. But knowing that, in another life, you could be there with all your expenses paidâ¦â
âI canât think like that,â I say softly. âDad made his decision.â
âWhen did Aaronâs band change guitarists?â
I swallow, understanding what sheâs getting at. âJust after I was born.â
âSo he had a newborn baby, a family to provide for, and he chose to follow his so-called ideals instead.â
âMy dad is a good man. Heâs worked his butt off for us for years.
