HOUSE OF OLDIES

35 Carmine St.

Owned and operated since 1968 by Bob Abramson, House of Oldies specializes in rare and out-of-print records from the’50s to the ’70s.

ALBUM 1700

70 Bedford St.

The cover of Peter, Paul & Mary’s Album 1700, which was released in 1967 and featured the hit “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” was shot here. The trio was inspired by advance production stills from the film Bonnie and Clyde, which would come out later that year. Posing in dapper cinematic gangster attire before a vintage car, the two male members of the group—Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey—provocatively held guitar cases instead of machine guns. In some territories, the image was swapped for one of the group sitting on a park bench holding balloons.

LOU REED’S RESIDENCE

53 Christopher St.

Lou Reed lived in an apartment above the Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher St. during the early ’70s, his Rock ’n’ Roll Animal period.
