Chapter Eighteen
âNow this is my kind of place,â said Coach Pisseri as he tore into his dinner of roast turkey and mashed potatoes. âHow cool is it to have a restaurant like this right under your hotel?â Apparently, he wasnât the only one with that opinion. The Dugout was fairly busy for a Tuesday night.
The boys, who hadnât eaten much at lunch, now fortified themselves for the long night ahead with thick steaks, while LouAnne opted for the healthier lake trout and sautéed vegetables.
âHow did the campers do today, Coach?â asked Bortnicker as he smothered his beef with A-1 sauce.
âBetter. Weâve more or less got them in positions now, so they were able to get a lot of technique work in. We even put together a Home Run Derby contest for the afternoon, and it was a blast. The Hall of Famers held a secret draft beforehand, so the two squads were fairly even. Then, Ozzie Smith and George Brett played for one team, and Carlton Fisk and Jim Rice with the other. I helped Niekro and Eckersley throw to the hitters, which got pretty frightening with those former pro sluggers out there. Theyâre not spring chickens, but they can still get around on a BP fastball. Thank goodness we had a pitching screen to hide behind, or I wouldnât have any teeth left. Only thing is, my shoulder is killing me now, like after I throw BP to you guys.â
âHey, Coach, youâd better watch it,â said T.J. âWe still have our whole season ahead, and weâre gonna need your arm.â
âPoint taken. But enough about me. Letâs hear about your exploits today.â
All three of the teens reported on their travels in and around the Hall of Fame, and also related the details of Clementeâs life - and death - which came to light in the library.
âWow,â said Pisseri. âItâs weird to think that what you see in the actual Museum is just a portion of what they have overall. That underground vault must be something. Speaking of the Museum, the whole camp is scheduled to do a VIP tour of the building tomorrow morning from nine to eleven. The entire coaching staff and the Hall of Famers will be with us. Theyâre not opening the Museum tomorrow morning till weâre all done. It would be a madhouse otherwise, people trying to get autographs and whatnot. Then weâll bus over to the Clark Center. Is our tour going to interfere with your work?â
âIt shouldnât,â said T.J. âWe have this exhibit room called the Halper Gallery all to ourselves, so we should be able to slip in and out with no problem. Weâll be reviewing tonightâs video and audio, I guess.â
âAnd now that youâre underway, how long you see the investigation taking?â
âThatâs a tough call. Typically, the max youâll see on the TV show is two nights. But the real reason we are here is to help Mr. Simmons, so it might take longer. Either way, I think what happens tonight will give us a good idea of whether we can accomplish anything.
