CHAPTER FOUR

Steam

In 1801, Fulton met Robert Livingston. Livingston had signed the Declaration of Independence. When Fulton met him, he was representing the U.S. government in France. He was very wealthy. He had purchased the right to operate steamboats on the Hudson River.

It was easy to go downstream on the Hudson River, because boats could float with the current. It was very difficult to go the other way. Livingston believed that a steamboat could be built to go against the current. It could make a lot of money carrying passengers.

So far, no one had been able to build a steamboat for Livingston. Livingston was very impressed with Fulton. He asked him to try to build one.
