When Torger Petersen viewed the Ohop Valley in 1887, he found a slow-draining wetland that stretched from Clay City to the Nisqually River. There was not a single channel, but a network of shallow ponds. This might be natural, but it was not good for a dairy farmer seeking pastureland.

The Ohop Valley is seen here; after a portion of the headwaters had been diverted, Ohop Lake was created by construction of a dam. A deep-sided main channel was dug, with many laterals draining the edges of the wetland into the main canal. Salmon found insufficient pools to allow a return to their spawning grounds.
