Chapter 21

“Jesus Christ!” The veins on each side of Dennis Galamond’s neck bulged beneath his skin. Every hour since he’d arrived at the warehouse headquarters, the White House had called for an update, and he sure as hell didn’t need this.

Robert Eldridge stood before his superior, wondering how many more screwups he’d be allowed before getting assigned a desk job in D.C. “They were already gone when we got there,” he explained sheepishly. “Nothing was left behind.”

“Nothing?” Galamond retorted, livid at the incompetence he was witnessing, the veins in his neck turning dark red. “There was nothing?”

“The librarian said they did a computer search and left. We scoured the entire building from the basement up. No sign of ’em.”

“No papers? Notes?”

“Blackmoor claims they locked her out, did their thing, and got out. The guy’s a professional…probably figured he didn’t have much time and didn’t hang around long enough to find out.” Eldridge followed Galamond across the room with his eyes.

“You keep someone there, just in case?”

“I’ve got eight men stationed there until I say otherwise.”

“Okay, get men out to both airports. I’ll have our people monitor the airline reservations system. I’m sure they’ll try to get a flight out.”

“Yes, sir.” Eldridge spun around and slunk away.

Galamond walked to the far wall and stared at a map of Salt Lake City. He clenched his teeth, regretting now that he didn’t have Macfadden taken out when they had him yesterday. A bullet to the head, followed by a quick trip to the disposal site where the body would be shredded, incinerated, and the remains scattered over a hundred square miles of Nevada desert. He kept that thought as he stared at the map and tried to anticipate where the two would move next.

The phone suddenly rang, tearing Galamond away from the wall. He cursed all the way back across the room, knowing who’d be at the other end, then picked it up and stuck it to his ear.

“Galamond here.” He looked up at the ceiling.

“Dennis, this is Frank at the White House. President wants an update.”

“We’ve got agents scouring the area. Snowstorm’s getting worse by the minute, and we don’t expect the front to get through until tomorrow. Based on the last contact they made, we’re sure they’re still in Salt Lake City.”

“We know that. We’ve been getting hourly reports from intelligence, so tell us something we don’t know. You need more men?”

“We’re okay.” Goddamn asshole. “We have both airports under surveillance and we’re checking every hotel. We’ll find them.”

“Make sure you find them quick. Intelligence intercepted a coded transmission from MI-6. Macfadden received something, Dennis. I want him and Kreiser found and eliminated. We’ll handle the diplomatic fallout later.”

“Yes, sir.”

The phone went dead and Galamond slammed the receiver down. Though eight years had passed since he’d last been ordered to take someone out, he didn’t relish the idea of once again becoming a government-sanctioned hitman. For a second, he almost softened, trying to figure out some way he could allow Macfadden and Kreiser to get out of this alive.
