CHAPTER TEN
âNo, in all things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.â
Romans 8:37
Damaris was woken up by Smokeyâs voice arguing with what sounded like with Jimmie. She looked around her and realised that is was already morning. Jimmie didnât end up saying what he wanted to say to Smokey and Corby never said a word other than introducing the lady. Shelia. The focus was on the special guest. Damaris wearily got out of bed and got dressed. She didnât know whether she was exhausted from lack of sleep or for trying hard to be nice last night to Shelia.
She slipped outside and headed to the direction of Smokey and Jimmieâs voice. She backed away as she noticed that Jimmie and Smokey were on the bottom step of the verandah.
âIâm ashamed of you, Jimmie!â Smokey was yelling, yanking her hand from his.
âSmokey, let me explain before you get on your high horse,â Jimmie said firmly. He was struggling to keep his cool.
âWhat?! When are you going to tell Da that they know sheâs here? Huh? That sheâs not safe, none of us are. And as for Jonathan, I donât believe you!â she hissed.
âPlease Smokey. God will help us,â Jimmie started to say.
âDonât you dare talk to me about God! I donât give a damn what God wants. Heâs not doing anything now.â
Damaris stood on dry bark which snapped loudly causing Jimmie and Smokey to jump.
âWhoâs there?â Jimmie said, cautioning Smokey to back away but she didnât move.
âDonât fret. Itâs only me, Da,â she said. âI didnât hear much but I do think I deserve an explanation too.â Jimmie looked at Smokey. She stared back at him, making sure he felt bad. His shoulders sagged a little then straightened up.
âWhatâs all this racket?â Corby said leaning up against the screen door, his shirt still only half tucked in and his hair all ruffled.
âIs everything okay?â asked Shelia. Damaris didnât want to face anybody yet, especially not Shelia. Corby moved out of the door opening for the rest of them to walk out.
âEverythingâs just fine,â Jimmie said sarcastically. âSee what youâve done now. Cause the whole household to wake up.â
âOh, really Jimmie! Right, well, in answer to your question Corby - fine, weâre just fine. For one, I hate you for not telling Damaris that her property, let alone her life, is at serious risk particularly now. For two, all you ever really cared about is that, lovey, dovey lady that was supposed to be dead whom you were going to marry. What a shame, she married somebody else.â Smokey was yelling at this point. Jimmie could feel his blood starting to boil. Boy did she have nerve.
âFor your information, Miss high and mighty Smokey. You need to get your facts right. This is my dear friend you are talking about! And you donât even know half of the story. Maybe a long time ago we were once together butâ¦âCorby stopped what he was saying but was too late. He shook his head at Damaris.
