Chapter twenty-seven

Memory

The seven of them stepped into the tunnel, running their hands along the walls as they looked around.

Inside, the walls were constructed of pure Italith crystal, the same as the entrance. The white crystal stretched down into the distance until it curved away out of sight, so far down that they couldn't see where it ended.

"Be cautious," Elder Isea instructed as her eyes lit up. "But this...is incredible."

Verse barely heard her. All of his attention was on the roar that was echoing all around him. It was as if the world itself were resounding in joy and calling him down further. He might have felt nervous, but there was no trace of hostility in the sound. Instead, he felt as if some powerful energy here was flowing into his body, strengthening him. It made him want to find the source.

The team looked at each other to check that everything was fine. Then they continued down. Three hundred meters along the tunnel, between one step and the next, the white crystal faded away, blending seamlessly with walls of a different type. The area where the two materials met was irregular, but flawless. It looked as if the crystal had been grown directly on top of it.

The texture of these walls was a gnarled pattern of ridges and dips, interspersed with broad flat areas. It some spots, it looked like the scales of some massive beast; in others, it was smooth or rippled. In a few places, it looked as if roots had grown into the stone and become part of it, eventually turning to stone.

“This must be a different part of the complex. It looks older,” Amari remarked, her eyes alert as she looked down the passage. “Do you think the Italith built this or found it?”

Isea placed her hand on the wall, running her fingertips over the ripples of stone, and Verse could feel the pulse of her aura as she used a sensing technique. A frown played over her lips.

“They definitely found it,” she declared after a moment, as she pulled her hand back from the wall. “The age of these walls is at least a hundred thousand years, and the Italith are only known to have been a culture for half that long, perhaps twenty to thirty thousand years before the Empire moved into this region.”

“So, they discovered this place as well?” Rain asked, her fingers trailing along the stone. “It feels...comfortable here, like the stone is alive. I can almost hear...” she trailed off before continuing. “There is some type of rhythm here, like the echoes of a song.”

Isea gave Rain a sharp, warning look, and then turned her attention to Verse as well. “It’s possible something here is resonating with your daos, but be careful not to get caught up in it. There are more types of traps in the world than we know.”

"The Italith crystal was probably grown on top of the other one," Verse replied, reaching out to touch the wall as well. "But that begs the question.
