PART VII

32

For the last four days, Henri had directed Freddy to send one of his guys to sit in the lobby of the George V. His only direction to Freddy was, “It has to be someone Michel has never met.”

“No problem there. He’s never come to our place. I don’t think he’s ever picked up a delivery at Gare du Nord or shipped any product out that way. I’ve probably got four guys he’s never laid eyes on.”

“Good,” Henri said. “Maybe rotate a couple of guys through.”

“And what do they do?”

“Just fucking sit there. Wear a decent suit. Sit there, say nine to five. Drink coffee. Read the papers. Have a nice lunch on you. No alcohol until after four. Tell each guy to look for guys hanging out who kind of look like he does.”

“Young gorillas, then,” Freddy said.

“You said it, not me, but yes. If they see something, call. Otherwise, check in around lunchtime and again at five.”

Henri had promised himself he wouldn’t get involved, that he would let Michel handle it. But the whole thing had never made sense to him. It just never added up, never sat right. Why would Michel volunteer? And why had he been Martin’s butt buddy for the last few months after a couple of years when they had no visible relationship at all? It just didn’t make sense. And, after a week, Henri couldn’t help himself. This seemed minimal to him, a light surveillance, nothing more. What was the harm? The only cost was the lunch bill and drinks between four and five, which were really between two and five — but who could blame Freddy’s kids? It was a beautiful lobby, and it was a handsome bar, and it was shit duty.
