Weird Shit

Lieutenant Dwayne Hicks pulled the phone from his pocket, saw the number flashing on the screen, and frowned.

“What now?” his partner, Sergeant Chuck Tolliver, asked.

Hicks lifted and turned the phone so Tolliver could see the screen. “Damn.”

“Yeah, Stoneman,” Hicks said, waiting until the vibrating stopped, and the call transferred to his voice mail.

He had no intention of jumping into a conversation or confrontation with Stoneman without some idea of what he wanted. Besides, the OSI team was standing around and he wasn’t sure he wanted to take an ass chewing from his superior in front of them.

“What the hell you think he wants?” Tolliver asked.

“Damned if I know, but it won’t be good.” Hicks punched the button to access his voice mail. “Let’s see what he’s got to say.”

Hicks held the phone to his ear, staring ahead at the forensics team moving in and out of the apartment that had been Zeke Clarin’s before his highly suspicious sudden death. Stoneman’s message was short and simple, if not sweet. “Call me as soon as you get this.”

“He didn’t say much,” Hicks said with a shrug. “Wants me to call.”

“No Idea.” Hicks shrugged and thumbed the number into his phone. “No use putting it off and getting him pissed. Better call now.”

“I suppose.” Tolliver nodded.

Stoneman answered immediately. “Lieutenant, how are things moving along at the scene?”

“Just working our way through processing the crime scene,” Hicks said.

“It is a crime scene then,” Stoneman said. It wasn’t really a question, but a statement of fact.

“I suppose I should have said suspected crime scene,” Hicks temporized. “But yes, we are treating it as a crime scene … at present.”

“Understood,” Stoneman said. “I appreciate the good work you and Tolliver are putting in on this, and I hope you can understand that I have a responsibility to keep the mayor in the loop. She has a lot of political capital vested in the investigation’s success.”

“I’m sure she does,” Hicks said, trying unsuccessfully to hide the sarcasm in his voice.

Stoneman paused, taking that in, then added, “I know mixing politics into the investigation probably leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It does in mine too,” he lied. “But try to understand that the mayor’s success is our success and with her support we can get a lot done … for the city, I mean.”

For once, Stoneman’s tone was conciliatory, not commanding. Hicks threw a surprised look at Tolliver standing there waiting for an update.

“I understand,” Hicks replied simply, not believing a word of it.

“And of course, with her support there will be things we can do for you and your partner as well,” Stoneman added.

And there it was. The old Stoneman with a brazen, if clumsy, attempt to influence the detectives.

“Of course,” Hicks smirked.

“Good,” Stoneman said. “So, when you finish up there at the crime scene, stop by
