As I return home, my father bombards me with questions. I push his hands away, making my way to the bar.

“Like you give a damn.” I mutter, pouring tequila into a glass and downing it, not caring about the blood staining my hands and clothes, deliberately tarnishing his pristine home.

“Watch your tone. I will not tolerate your disrespect, hijo,” my father warns, but I couldn’t care less.

“Boss, we were attacked. But we got the shipment to the buyer. All accounted for and uninjured.” Hector interjects.

“Uninjured? Is that what you call testing the product before giving it to the buyers?” I confront Hector, getting in his face. He doesn’t back down, stepping up to me.

“Don’t act innocent, Rio. You’re just as guilty as the rest of us. How you conned your way into Rachel’s life, forcing yourself on her. You think we don’t know what you’ve been up to. So what if we had to test your loyalty today.” Hector’s words fuel my anger, and the demon within me surfaces. I don’t even realize that I am attacking him until hands begin to restrain me.

“Rio, that’s enough,” someone calls out.

I swing attempting to hit anyone who touches me, seeing nothing but red.

“Rio.” Someone warns.

I hear a gun click, and my vision clears.

Hector struggles beneath me, my hands wrapped around his neck. I release him as my father warns me for the last time.

“I’m out.” I declare, lifting my hands and striding out the door.

As I walk out of the house I grew up in, I make a promise to myself never to return until my father is six feet under the ground just like he put my mother. I ignore his demands for me to stop.

“You’ll regret this.” He coos but I flip him off and ride off into the darkness.
