Scholarships for Other Types of Talent

Some colleges offer merit awards to students who excel in areas other than academics and sports. The type of award offered varies greatly from college to college, so you need to check a college’s website to see what opportunities are available for your child. (These scholarships often won’t appear on a college’s net price calculator.) You might find merit awards available for students who meet the following criteria:

Students who live in a particular town or region

Students who have attended a particular high school

Students who have attended a parochial high school

Minority students

Students of a particular religion

Students who have a parent who is a clergy member

Those who have demonstrated outstanding community service and leadership

Those who plan to major in a particular program

Students who have a parent who is an alumnus of the school

Students who have demonstrated artistic talents in the fine arts (theater, music, and art)
