"Are you certain no one saw who delivered this?" I ask Maria.
She gives a helpless shrug, her arms folded in front of her. "Iâm positive. Iâve asked everyone. No one saw a courier service arrive."
"Itâs not a real courier service," I say, flicking the envelope with the back of my nail. "Itâs been dummied up to make it look official."
"It might have been dropped off at lunchtime when there was no one around," Maria suggests.
"Wasnât there anyone at the reception desk?" I ask trying to curb the irritation in my voice.
"Faye was there," Maria replies. "She said she left for a couple of minutes to grab a water bottle from the refrigerator. That could have been when the envelope was left on the counter."
I swallow down my trepidation. That means someone was watching for an opportunity. Am I being stalked again?
Maria coughs discreetly and straightens up. "Iâll be in my office if you need anything else."
She closes the door behind her, and I lean back and thread my fingers restlessly through my hair. I donât know what to make of the letter, but it has left me shaken on several fronts, beginning with the fact that Ryder is dead. Who else could have sent it? And why? Iâve known Kathy my entire life, so I donât for one minute believe thereâs any merit to the message. But it does mean that someone is still out there jerking my chain. Itâs thrown me back into a chasm of terror I was only just beginning to climb out of.
I was sure the harassment would come to a screeching halt with Ryderâs death. Could this be something else entirely? There are plenty of other crazies out there. After the plane crash, I dealt with a few looky-loos driving slowly past the software heiressâs house as if I was some kind of side show.
I press the tips of my fingers to my temples and rub them in tiny circles to release the tension. My thoughts are spinning faster than I can process them. How would anyone know that Kathy is here in Austin? Did I mention it to Gareth? Or Margo? No, I talked to them before Jack told me heâd hired her. I finger the ominous note thoughtfully. I should call Gabriel and update him on this latest twist. Iâm anxious to hear what he makes of it, and whether he thinks I should notify the police.
I call his office and leave a message with his assistant. Iâll need to save the letter as evidence, but I donât want to keep it in my purse and run the risk of Kathy seeing it. I take a quick picture as I weigh my options. I should probably stash it in my desk for now. It would distress Kathy to no end to think that someone was still harassing me even after Ryderâs death. And it would hurt her to think her name was being dragged through the mudânot to mention terrify her. She might elect to pack up and go home right when I need her most.
