This must be how Jerrod feels. Suddenly, I have sympathy for him. As terrible of a rapper he is, he still loves it and it must’ve hurt to hear Destiny say that he can’t stay on beat.

I picture me and Delia together, me in the studio singing loudly, giving it all my might.

I take off my headphones. The engineer stands up and claps. “Bravo, Darren. You really knocked it out of the park.”

I look at Delia, anxiously. “So? What do you think?”

She smiles at me sadly, and shakes her head. “I’m sorry, Darren. I just don’t like it.”

“What didn’t you like about it?” I ask her. “Tell me. Was it my voice? The lyrics?”

“Everything,” she says. “You just aren’t the singer you thought you were.”
