CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Clear the Way

Inspecting the side street outside the museum, Ethan and Liz cautiously watched the events unfold. First came an ambulance, which tended to the three injured assassins. There was no sign of the fourth one, who had been stabbed by his cohort. Thirty minutes later, the squad car, which Jacob was locked within, sped off into the night.

Liz peeked over at Ethan with apologetic eyes. “I need to go home,” she said. “Things are gonna get ugly if my dad finds out I didn’t come home all night.”

“Liz. Our priority is to get Jacob. I know it makes things much worse for you, but your dad’s gonna find out there was a girl fighting off the assassins. So, you need to assume he already knows.”

Her gaze returned to the outside. Only a few stragglers left, and they looked to be heading out as well. Ethan knew that she was in turmoil between the two options, both of which were far from ideal. She shook her head, but said, “Fine, but we need to talk to Alice first, to see if she knows where they took him.”

Ethan leaned forward, trying to catch her eye. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I made my decision. I’m not going home tonight. Let’s go.”

Ethan grabbed her arm as she tried to turn away. “We will protect you, Liz. I will never let anything happen to you.”

I single tear streaked down her cheek, which she quickly wiped away. “Shut up. You know that’s not true.”

Ethan had never seen her so fragile before. And he knew that he couldn’t guarantee her safety, but he meant the intent with every fiber of his being. “Come on. We’re going to figure this out. All of it.”

One last check out the window, and the street was clear. All the vehicles and people were gone. It looked as if nothing had happened there tonight, but that was far from the truth. A broken window, and that other stuff too.

Ethan and Liz carefully made their way back to their bikes, checking for traps and finding none. They headed out to the Rabbit Hole. Ethan guided Jacob’s bike to a secure location in the woods. His mind was cluttered with problems and far too few solutions. The schools were a mess, his favorite teacher was heading into a disastrous situation, Alice was in exile, Jacob was abducted by the police, Liz was on dangerous ground with her dad, and tucked within Ethan’s pocket was a treasure map to one of the greatest undiscovered treasures in the history of the United States.

Not a word was spoken through their entire journey to the Rabbit Hole. The ride was a blur to Ethan, as he couldn’t escape his own thoughts since they’d left the city.

When Ethan and Liz entered the Rabbit Hole, only Jim was awake, quietly reading a book in the library.

“Hey, guys. It’s good to see you,” Jim said, quickly setting his book aside. His face lit up when he saw Liz for the first time in quite a while.
