Fred Hampton

Aaron wasn’t the only one who thought so. Bobby Seale had privately tapped Fred as his successor, to lead the national Party in his place if he was killed.

When the FBI declassified their COINTELPRO papers twenty-some years later, the paper trail revealed that a similar thought process had motivated Fred Hampton’s murder. COINTELPRO agents had been tasked with “preventing the rise of a black ‘messiah,’” a strong leader and speaker who had the potential to unite and motivate Black people. They looked at Fred and saw a future Martin Luther King Jr. or Malcolm X — someone who was perhaps even more dangerous than either of those icons before him because, under the Panther banner, Fred had found a way to bring together the best of both the civil rights and Black nationalist visions, as well as uniting people across racial lines. It was heartbreaking for Black America to be robbed of a leader with such potential.
