Chapter 20
Shane shielded his eyes from the sun, as he craned his neck and looked up to inspect the hotel roof from the ground. “What kind of net? And is that even possible?”
“Lots of mosquito netting in the clubhouse. Rolls of it,” Stu said. “Could be useful.”
Stu's idea was to build a protective net that would catch and repel any hand grenades that might be dropped from enemy gliders. But it would need to go over the lodge, above the roof. It was a far-fetched plan, but it was all they had at the moment, and more gliders were bound to fly back soon. The next attack could be within hours.
“We can stretch a net from the two towers,” Shane said. “That would protect everything from the fifth floor down. But it won't help the roof, ninth floor. Any explosions there could set the whole lodge on fire.”
“So let me understand this,” Jason said, his brow creased with confusion. “You want the grenades to be stopped before hitting the ground, bounce back into the air... and explode in the air?”
“Yep.” Stu said
“That's a real bag of magic tricks, man... and real timing. If it isn't timed right, the grenade will go off on the net. I'm not sure that helps us.”
“It's mighty crazy,” Mitch said, watching from the side and chewing on a twig.
“It protects the grounds and the buildings. Mid-air, or on the net, it's gotta be better than exploding on the clubhouse, for example.”
“It does sound crazy,” Jason admitted. “But I'll help. I'll also pull extra fire extinguishers from the floors we're not using, in case we get a fire up front.”
Shane looked up at the towers again, trying to imagine this scheme, then said, “I guess so. Let's get to it, men.”
It took all day to get the nets hooked from the top of each tower to the window hooks on the fifth and sixth floors. The net was angled down toward the front, so that any explosive devices would roll toward the outer wall. If they couldn't get the grenades to bounce, at least the angled net might roll them to the ground in front of the lodge – not inside. Three fire extinguishers were placed in the front courtyard, two in each tower, and a dozen inside the hotel lobby.
Shane climbed the roof of the high tower and fastened his end of the net. It was one of those great fall days, when the weather is unseasonably warm and pleasant, and it touched seventy degrees by mid-day. He stopped briefly to enjoy the soft breeze on his face. This might be the last good day before winter. The nights had already turned cold, and chilly days were soon to follow. Snow would come by next month, and it usually got heavy up here in the mountains. But today was warm; it was spectacular. He hoped it set the tone for a new chapter in their lives, for the tide to turn.
By dinner time, the crew felt they were ready for the next enemy strike.
