RACHEL WATCHED AS HE ran off, wanting to tell him to be careful. Wanting to tell him to stay away from the water. Wanting to tell him to come with her. Instead, she turned and jogged towards the house. There would be a lot to talk about in a bit. And while she waited, if he was home, it was time to have a good talk with Justiz.

Chapter Fourteen

LEONARDO LEANED AGAINST the bookshelf, Rachel at his side, resting on the window seat, and Shakira paced the row of shelves across the room. An uneasy silence draped the room. Leonardo reached for Rachel's shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Shakira paused. "Of course, Justiz isn't here. He's impossible." She looked to Rachel, then Leonardo. "It could mean more lab Torrents are anywhere among the Bitterroots. They could be in town. Anything is possible."

"I fear you could be correct, Shakira."

Her eyes carried to the ceiling, ears twitched, then pinned back. Dropping her gaze to meet Leonardo, she pulled out a chair, sat, and stood again. "Did the Torrent say any more when you returned to him with food?"

He shook his head. "He knows so little. The shark cannot speak well and relies on natural instincts more than intelligence. We will not obtain any information from him."

Rachel turned and stared out the window. The last moments with Dereck shifted through her thoughts. Fingers tapping her leg, she closed her eyes, drowning out Shakira's concern and Leonardo's inability to provide answers. Overlooking something. Dots were waiting to be connected, why couldn't she see them? Rachel opened her eyes and scanned the front yard. Months had passed without conscience effort to think of Dereck. His face had grown dim, voice nearly lost altogether. She bit her lip. Time to remember.

The view changed, shifted to the past and Rachel winced as thoughts carried her to the abandoned hotel. Her thoughts hovered, battling will and desire. No choice but to remember. The light of day faded, replaced by the blackness of a room shut in with aged wood, forgotten by the world. She gulped and pushed the thoughts further, head aching in remembrance. A metal table, cold and unforgiving. A man she no longer knew.

"Oh, come on, Rachel! It was black ops. The call of duty. Of course, I enlisted in the program."

Rachel wrapped her arms around her chest, the memory of his voice ripping at her heart.

Black ops. The call of duty. Black ops. The call of duty. I enlisted.

Rachel whispered without turning around, eyes locked on a fading memory. "The labs are testing their creations." She felt both of her friends come up behind her as the yard returned to the bright sun of day.

"What did you say?" Shakira asked.

Emotionless, Rachel faced them. Her stomach turned. "Dereck said it was black ops. Even Justiz made that remark once. The labs haven't stopped creating Torrents. And now, they are putting them out in the world. Like running test flights."

Shakira straightened, her eyes widened. She looked to Leonardo.
