“I’m sorry,” I said, still holding her hand but hating that I had to put even a little bit of space between us so I could dig in my pocket for my phone.

“This might be my daughter…”

“No problem at all,” Lacey said, smiling sweetly. “I hope everything is okay.”

Yep. Kristin’s name flashed across the screen as a thousand what if’s

raced through my mind.

What if she’s in trouble?

What if the house is on fire?

What if she invited a boy over?

I swiped to answer and nearly fumbled the phone as I brought it to my ear. “Honey. Is everything okay?”

The heavy sigh on the other end of the line and the following seconds of silence let me know that whatever was going on must not be very urgent.

“Dad, where are you?” She sounded annoyed. Almost as annoyed as I happened to be feeling at that particular moment. “I need you to come home now.”

“I’ll be home soon, sweetheart,” I said, through gritted teeth. “You can’t be out of pizza already, can you?”

I’d left her with a whole pizza and her favorite shows. That should have at least kept her occupied for a while, right?

“No, I’m not out of pizza. There’s an emergency.”

Now she had my attention. “What? What kind of emergency? Are you okay?”

I instantly felt guilty for my annoyance. I never would have forgiven myself if something had happened to her while I was out having fun.

“A… dishwasher emergency. There’s like… bubbles and water and stuff.

Like, everywhere.”

I blinked, her words taking a moment to penetrate the adrenaline-fueled haze of my thoughts. “A what? Something is wrong with the dishwasher?

But…” I shook my head, trying to make sense of what she was saying. “So, you’re okay, but there’s something wrong with the dishwasher, is that right?”

“Right,” she answered.

“And it’s leaking? Soap and water?”

“All over the floor.”

I sighed. Okay. At least she wasn’t hurt. That was the most important thing. But now what in the hell was going on with the dishwasher?

“Is the dishwasher still running?” I asked.

“Yeah, it’s all over the place. You really should come home…”

I stopped walking so suddenly that Lacey gave me an alarmed look.

“Sorry,” I mouthed.

For the second time in the same day, I had to try and keep my cool while I was fuming on the inside. What had started out sounding like a dire

emergency—or at least a freak accident—was starting to sound more and more like sabotage.

Date sabotage.

Perpetrated by my fourteen-year-old daughter.

“Turn off the water, Kristin,” I said. “And grab some towels from the hall closet to start soaking up the water. I’ll be home as soon as I can.”

“Fine,” she huffed. “I’ll try to stop it. But hurry, okay?”

She hung up before I could respond. Which was probably for the best, because I didn’t trust myself not to start letting out some of my frustrations over the phone.

“Is everything okay?” Lacey asked, as soon as I’d slipped my phone back into my pocket.

“Yeah… well, no. Not really.” I shook my head. “I don’t even know what to do with that girl sometimes.
