‘Bula Carrie?’

Carrie drowsily blinked at the soft greeting, confused by the colour of the sheer curtains floating in the balmy breeze. Where was she? More to the point, where was Ana?

It was Naomi who’d gently roused her and who answered her unspoken question now. ‘Leah is just bringing Ana and I have some refreshment for you.’

‘Oh, I’m so sorry.’ Carrie sat up. ‘How long have I been asleep?’

Naomi just laughed. ‘You need rest. Don’t move, we’ll bring everything to you.’ She smiled at her. ‘New mothers need to be cared for.’

Leah arrived with Ana and Carrie fed her. Refreshed from the nap, she talked to the two women and together they cooed over Ana. Then Leah took her for a walk while Naomi got to work on Carrie with a facial, manicure and on her hair.

Carrie melted. It was luxurious. Every inch of her body was cleansed, massaged and cared for. Blissfully indulging herself, she chatted with Naomi, learning about her family, her ambitions and her pleasure in Massimo’s plans for the resort.

Two hours later she stared in amazement at her reflection. Her hair had been trimmed and was shining. Somehow the circles beneath her eyes had faded and her skin glowed even though she wasn’t even wearing any make-up.

‘I brought over one of the dresses from your room.’ Naomi winked at her in the mirror. ‘There are some lovely things in there.’

Carrie looked doubtfully at the pale lemon dress Naomi had selected. It looked clingy but she didn’t want to disappoint the woman who’d done so much for her. The silky fabric slithered over her body, so soft it was almost sensual. Again she blinked at her reflection. Both the style and colour looked better than she’d imagined they would. She slid her feet into the sleek sandals Naomi produced with a flourish.

‘Much better.’ Naomi positively beamed.

For a tiny moment Carrie hesitated, but it would be a shame for the clothing to remain unworn. Could she trust his motives? Was she a prisoner in a gilded cage or was he simply demonstrating how comfortable he could make her life to convince her to say yes?

You’re not the reason why he brought you here.

He was doing all this for Ana. And Carrie couldn’t be dependent on him for everything. She would need her own space away from him to continue to develop her own sense of self-worth—that was why she’d come travelling in the first place, wasn’t it?

She couldn’t risk losing her identity and drowning in his, and that was a very real possibility, because his was that forceful. He loomed that large in life. Yet she felt more alive than she’d felt in months. And that was him too, wasn’t it? Something within her sparked into life when he was around. That first night, she’d laughed and teased easily and had been frankly fearless in what she’d said. Now he provoked her again.

Mulling over her confusing thoughts, Carrie went to see Ana. As she quietly walked onto the deck of the nursery wing she saw Massimo standing beside her cot.
