Victoria was exhausted. Her body ached, and she felt like her feet were cement blocks. She sat down on the floor of the surgeons’ changing room and rested her head against her knees. The surgery had gone well, but she was emotionally wrung out.

When had her life become so complicated?

She was so glad the little girl had pulled through. That little girl had a new liver, and she would have a mom and dad who cared for her.

She had a chance.

Something Victoria had never had.

She was envious of that little girl’s good fortune.

She’d wake up from her surgery and she’d have a family.

Victoria had never had a family, but it was something she always secretly wanted.

Whereas Matthew had a brother and parents, yet he seemed to have no desire to be around them.

She didn’t get it.

It was obvious he was cared for and loved. And she wondered what that was like.

You could’ve known if you hadn’t pushed Matthew away.

Matthew walked into the changing room and paused.

“You okay?” he asked.

No.

Except she didn’t say that. “Just tired. It was a long surgery.”

“Yeah, but it went well.”

She nodded. “I was a foster child.”

He seemed shocked. “You were?”

And she couldn’t quite believe the words were coming out. “You asked me before why I seemed off, and it’s because I grew up in the system.”

Matthew’s expression softened, and he came to sit beside her on the floor. “What happened to your parents?”

“My mother died when I was ten. I have very small, fragmented memories of her. You know those kinds of memories that are orange-hued and faded?”

He smiled. “Yeah. What about your father?”

“I never knew him, so I was put in the foster system when my mother died.”

“I’m sorry. That’s horrible.”

She shrugged. Numb. She never cried and she wasn’t going to start now, but she felt relief sharing this with him. Like it was a huge weight off her chest.

“Not all foster parents are bad. Most aren’t,” he said softly.

“I know. I’ve met wonderful people since then, but that wasn’t my experience growing up.” She sighed. “I’m exhausted.”

And she was. There had been a lot going on since she’d come here to St. Thomas, and she felt like she was crashing from it all.

Like she was free falling.

“You need to go home and get some rest.”

“Right.” She stood, and Matthew got up, too. “I better call a cab. I usually just walk, but it’s midnight.”

“I’ll drive you.”

“I thought we weren’t going to get involved with each other.”

“We’re not. A friend can drive a friend home.”

She should say no and just take a cab, but she wanted to be friends with Matthew. She’d missed her friend.

“Okay. I’ll grab my stuff and meet you in the lobby.”

“Sounds good,” he said as he left the room.

Victoria quickly got out of her surgical scrubs and back into her street clothes. She grabbed her stuff from the boardroom where she worked and made her way to the lobby, where Matthew was waiting for her. They walked out to his car, and she climbed in, her body relaxing against the supple leather of the interior.
