We drove through herds of growling cars, weaving between lanes as I tried to maintain a focus on the road. All the windows were open but I still felt like I was melting. Throbbing in time with the engine, my brain seemed to be pushing my eyes out of their sockets, while my heart was beating a hole in my ribcage. My arms looked like someone else’s; they were on the wheel, but I couldn’t feel them. They seemed to move involuntarily, driving on my behalf as I became an observer in this nightmare.

‘I need to stop.’ I said, blowing sweat from the end of my nose. ‘I feel funny.’

I pulled onto the hard shoulder and stepped out of the car. I have never been so pleased to smell manure.

‘Shall I drive?’ Emma asked, innocently.

‘You can drive?!’ I panted, bending forwards with my hands on my knees.

‘Yes.’ Emma responded.

Relieved, I fell backwards onto the verge.

The clouds seemed to smile at me.

The world aligned itself as I settled into the passenger seat. I reclined my seat and drifted off to sleep to the sound of the mixtape I had made for Emma, entitled This tapes rocks…just like you. I really had no shame.
