Pause

I had to stop the track to show you something. I was just lying on the mattress, debating whether more people are conceived on firm or on soft ones and counting the tiny cracks that fissure the cement floor—but then I saw something.

A little flower petal.

I know exactly who this belongs to. She was wearing a flower in her hair the last time anyone saw her. At the mall party when she was dressed as the sexiest pinup girl ever. Letting me know who occupied this room just before me.

This is a clue left behind by Ruby.

I pick it up.

And then suddenly a siren rings out; I’m scared half to death.

A little metal slot in the wall opens, and something pours into a trough.

“Are these…?” I step closer, carefully. “Cookies!” I’m already frothing at the mouth. Salivating hard-core. My hungry belly is making a rap beat as we speak. But then I stop myself. Why the hell are they just giving me cookies? The old Luna would have stuffed her face, but this one has survival instincts. They smell like home, but I know they’re not from there. I wish they were waffles anyway. After all, waffles are just pancakes with six-packs—and that has to count for something.

I won’t accept these.

I don’t trust anything in this place. How can you when you were lied to for so long? Every time I think about the night of the bonfire, I can’t help but remember the important clues that we found, and the ones we totally missed, because we were not alone—not at all.
