EXAMPLES OF THOUGHTS THAT CLING TO A CONSENSUS REALITY AND CAUSE ANXIETY

•There is only one way to do things so I must stick to what I’ve been taught to believe. Even if my beliefs don’t feel good and holding fast to them increases my anxiety, I must follow them.

•I should have a purpose in life. And it should be one that’s acceptable to my family, even if it’s not what I’d ideally like. That’s what responsible people do. If I don’t have a purpose, then people won’t take me seriously.

•I should be more productive/creative/ambitious. This is what a conscientious person does. I have to prove that I can step up and get things done. Being mediocre means I am a loser.

•I should follow in my father’s or mother’s footsteps. I know they want that so it would please them, even if their footsteps don’t fit the ones I’d like to take. I’m sure they wouldn’t approve of the career I’d love to pursue, so I probably won’t try it. I don’t want to disappoint my family.

•I should be married with children. Isn’t that what grown-ups do? I haven’t met the right partner and feel a lot of pressure to find him or her. I’m not even sure that I’m ready to have children yet or to even be married. But I know it’s what I’m supposed to do.

•I’m supposed to be happy. So I will put on a happy face, even though I’m not feeling it. I feel anxious, not content. But I hide it well and smile to cover my pain. I don’t want people to worry about me or to think I am a downer.
