Though I couldn’t recall having closed my eyes, I awoke from a deep sleep to patches of sun on my face and soft, downy feathers brushing against my skin.

A brilliant yellow sun sifted through the slouching pines. The ground had dried overnight, and the air was filled with a scent like straw and mulch. Hawk was still nestled beside me. I was sprawled on my back, my T-shirt soaked with dew. Everything felt so much less bleak that morning, but I believe I would have thought the same had I awoken in hell, as long as Hawk was by my side.

Never had I once doubted that I would find Hawk—I’d known that I would. I’d felt her presence all along, as if she were part of me. Yet somehow now that I had found her, it felt less real than when I had only imagined being with her again. It felt like a dream.

She stirred, but didn’t open her tired eyes. I lay there next to her for a long moment before finally peeling myself up off the ground. I lifted a hand to shield my eyes as I scanned our new surroundings. We were much higher up in the mountains, far from the location of my camp. I knew there was no way we could go back, not now—not after the attack.

Why had the RGM been out this far? It seemed unlikely that the pilot had just happened to be passing by. Something didn’t add up.

I’d been one of the few to scout out the conditions of Earth before our reentry. I knew a little of what made the RGM tick—how this militia worked and what sort of equipment they had at their fingertips. Their highly advanced radar could comb the landscape for miles, searching for unfamiliar or suspicious activity, but even with such advanced technology, their signal was still swallowed by the mountains. I had heard that, in some cases, the RGM would attach a tracker to a member’s helmet before particular missions, but this was never a secret to the member themselves. Icarus, Areos, and Charlie didn’t have them. There was no way they could have detected us way out here.

I rekindled the fire I’d built the night before and watched Hawk as she slept. Her wings were tucked close to her body and she was nestled into the thick blanket of golden pine needles.

After a little while she stirred, this time opening her sharp, dark eyes.

“Good morning,” I greeted her softly as the flames took.

She responded only by closing her eyes again. I grinned.

“It’s colder this far up. I usually return to the mountain’s base to camp, but… well, it’s a long story.”

She murmured a trill.

“I know—we have nothing but time. But first we need to come up with a plan.”

Hawk peeled open one eye inquiringly.

I half rolled my eyes. “You know very well what I’m talking about.”

She didn’t reply because she couldn’t.

“This!” I gestured wildly at her, though still grinning helplessly. “You being an animal.”

She gave an aggressive sort of chirp.
