Chapter 21

Work the next morning dragged on and on as Callie struggled to concentrate. All she could think of was the Maxwells, and Ana, and what else may be happening on that compound.

Far from giving her any guidance or peace, speaking to Thalia had ignited a strange feeling of restlessness and worry that she couldn’t shake, that overtook any attempt at distraction she tried.

Somehow, she made it through the morning and left the office in relief to have a quick lunch with Angie.

Angie looked exhausted and harried, but she still shot Callie a smile as they met at the usual spot in the park. She had the day off, so today she was pushing the twins in a stroller.

“How are my babies?” Callie asked as she knelt down to smile at the tykes. Paige gave her a grin, showing off her one tooth that had begun poking through her gum. Paxton just glared, his small face screwed up in the precursor of a wail as he spat out his pacifier.

“Little monsters, as usual,” Angie answered, but grinned tiredly as she did. She began walking again as Paxton let out his first displeased wail. “Paxton handles teething with a lot more yelling than Paige.”

“I’d scream if sharp baby teeth were ripping through my gums. I understand his complaints,” Callie said. The baby in question fussed again, and Angie stopped to put his pacifier back in his mouth. He chewed on it frantically, his small button nose still wrinkled in displeasure as his sister babbled behind him in the double stroller.

“Talk. Did the dead girl’s dad have anything useful?”

“Not really. But my sister had some insights.”

A frown appeared on Angie’s face as she listened to Callie relay all they’d learned so far.

“Xavier thinks he can find out who this guy really is?”

“Only if Jerry McCarthy is his real name. Otherwise, we have nothing. Our only other hope of figuring this out is Faith. Ana, I mean. If we can find her.”

“About that, I found something out just before you got here,” Angie said, adjusting the sun cover over the babies as the cold autumn sun came out from behind the clouds. “I left my number with the motel clerk when I found out she was gone. Apparently, she called to see if anyone had come looking for her and left a number that he could call if anyone did. Made him promise not to rat her out to whoever was looking. Too bad for her twenty bucks opened his mouth.”

“Do you think she was worried about us tracing her, or someone else?”

“I don’t know. He said she seemed frantic about it, but I don’t see why she’d be scared of us. Annoyed, maybe. If she’s scared, I feel like it’s more likely to be them. The important part is that she gave him a number to call.”

“And you got the number?”

“Of course I did,” Angie said with over-the-top outrage. “You think Xavier is the only person who can get info? Here.”

She gave Callie a piece of paper with ten numbers jotted on it.
